Scientific Name: Mercenaria mercenaria
The quahog is a bivalve mollusk that lives in bays and estuaries along the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico. It has a dirty-gray or whitish exterior shell, a white interior shell, and interlocking grooves called cardinal teeth.

The name "mercenaria" comes from the Latin word for wages or a hired worker. This may be because beads made from the quahog's shell, called "wampum," were used as a type of money.
